Recovery after a facelift is often much more comfortable than patients envision. Still, there are steps you can take to improve your recovery experience. As someone who works closely with facelift patients every day (and who’s had one myself), I can tell you that small recovery habits make a big difference.
Here are 10 proven tips to help your healing go smoothly and set you up for the best possible outcome.
1. Sleep With Your Head Elevated
For at least the first 2 weeks, sleep with your head elevated on 2 pillows or in a recliner. This position helps reduce swelling, minimize fluid buildup, and protect your incisions from pressure. Try to avoid side sleeping until Dr. Camp gives the all-clear.
2. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is key to recovery. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and limit your intake of caffeine and sodium, as they can exacerbate swelling. Keep the skin hydrated and soft with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer, and follow Dr. Camp’s post-op skincare instructions carefully.
3. Eat a Balanced, Protein-Rich Diet
Your body needs protein, vitamins, and antioxidants to rebuild tissue and reduce inflammation. Focus on lean proteins (like eggs, chicken, and fish), plus colorful fruits and vegetables. Avoid salty or highly processed foods, as they can slow healing or increase swelling.
4. Start Gentle Movement Early
Light walking around the house (starting as soon as the day after surgery) boosts circulation, reduces the risk of blood clots, and helps you feel more like yourself. Skip strenuous exercise or bending over for at least 2 weeks. Listen to your body; overexertion can slow the healing process.
5. Use Cold Compresses
For the first 48 hours, apply cold compresses for short intervals—10 to 15 minutes at a time—to help control swelling. Don’t apply ice directly to your skin and avoid pressing too hard. Keeping your head elevated while you do this enhances the effect. Discover more tips for reducing post-facelift swelling.
6. Invest in a Few Recovery Essentials
A few products can make healing easier and more comfortable:
- A gentle cleanser, such as Cetaphil or La Roche-Posay Toleriane, can help avoid irritation.
- A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect healing skin from UV damage.
- Loose, button-down or zip-up clothing so you don’t have to pull anything over your head.
After your incisions are closed, silicone gel or scar strips help support optimal scar healing.
7. Follow All Post-Op Instructions
Even if you feel great, resist the urge to skip steps. The detailed instructions you’ll receive from Dr. Camp and our team are designed to keep your recovery on track and prevent avoidable problems. This includes instructions on how to clean your incisions, when to remove bandages, and what to avoid in skincare products.
8. Don’t Skip Follow-Up Appointments
These visits are just as important as the surgery itself. Dr. Camp will check your healing progress, remove sutures when ready, and ensure your results are coming together as expected.
9. Know When To Call the Office
Minor swelling and tightness are normal, but you should always contact us right away if you experience:
- Sudden or uneven swelling
- Excessive bruising or bleeding
- Severe pain not controlled by medication
- Fever, redness, or drainage near your incisions
Our team is available and happy to help. Our post on facelift FAQs provides more information.
10. Be Patient
Healing is as much emotional as physical. It’s normal to feel self-conscious or impatient while waiting for swelling to fade. Remember that your results are worth the wait. Most patients feel confident attending a special event, such as a wedding or class reunion, by 3 to 4 weeks after surgery. However, I recommend scheduling your facelift about 2 or 3 months before any major event to allow plenty of time for healing and refinement.
Our Facelift Recovery Guide is a valuable resource for learning what to expect during the recovery process. With the right preparation and support, facelift recovery is smoother and more manageable than most people expect. If you’re ready to explore your options, we’re here to help.
