Let’s clear something up: not all facelifts are created equal. If you’ve been googling your way through facial rejuvenation options and wondering what the heck a deep plane facelift is – welcome, you’re in the right place.
I’m an acute care nurse practitioner, co-owner of our practice (with my board-certified plastic surgeon husband – more on him later), and yes… I’ve had a deep plane facelift myself. So I’m not just talking shop – I’ve lived this. My own experience included a deep plane facelift, neck lift, brow lift, upper and lower blepharoplasty, and Sciton deep laser skin resurfacing.
That gives me a unique perspective—both as a patient and as a provider—on what makes today’s facelift techniques so exciting. Let’s talk about the difference between a traditional facelift and a deep plane facelift, how each works, what kind of results you can expect, and why one of them may be the future of facial rejuvenation.
How Each Technique Works
A traditional facelift focuses on tightening the skin and the fibrous muscle layer just beneath it (the SMAS). It’s effective for smoothing jowls and redefining the jawline, but it mostly lifts from the surface.
A deep plane facelift, on the other hand, works from within. Instead of pulling the skin tighter, the deeper layers of the face—including muscle, connective tissue, and fat pads—are carefully repositioned. This technique restores youthful volume and structure, creating smoother, more natural movement. In the right hands, it looks effortless.
In simple terms:
- The traditional facelift refines the outer layer.
- The deep plane facelift restores the underlying foundation.
The difference shows up not just in how you look, but also in how naturally your face moves and ages over time.
How They Look & How Long They Last
Patients always ask, “Will it look natural?” That’s the heart of this comparison. Here’s what typically distinguishes each approach:
| Traditional Facelift | Deep Plane Facelift | |
| Focus Areas | Lower face, jowls, jawline | Midface, cheeks, jawline, and neck |
| Look | Smooths skin and defines contours | Restores natural volume and soft contours |
| Skin Tension | More tension at the surface | Less tension—skin settles naturally |
| Longevity | 5–7 years | 10–15 years |
| Movement | Can feel slightly tight | Moves freely with expression |
Both options can produce beautiful results. But the deep plane technique goes a step further, lifting from the inside out. It delivers the kind of results you feel as much as see—your smile, your expressions, your energy.
The Deep Plane Facelift: Where the Magic Happens
Now we’re talking. A deep plane facelift goes way beyond skin deep. It lifts and repositions the structures beneath the SMAS – we’re talking cheek pads, ligaments and all of those foundational layers that actually make your face look youthful.
Why it’s a game changer:
- Lifts the midface (hello cheekbones!)
- Softens deep folds (bye-bye nasolabial lines!)
- Leaves the skin with less tension= (way more natural!)
- And yep, the results last longer!
I had one myself – and let me tell you, I didn’t want to look “tight.” I wanted to look like me, just refreshed and lifted and like I sleep 10 hours a night on a silk pillow (i don’t). Mission accomplished.
Who’s a Good Candidate?
If you’re beginning to notice sagging in your cheeks, jowls, or neck, and you’re ready for something more lasting than fillers or nonsurgical skin tightening, you’re likely a great candidate for a deep plane facelift.
In our Fort Worth practice, we’ll walk you through your candidacy based on:
- Your anatomy: how much tissue laxity you have and where.
- Your goals: whether you want subtle rejuvenation or a more comprehensive transformation.
- Your lifestyle: how much downtime fits your schedule.
- Your previous procedures: if you’ve had fillers or threads, we’ll factor that into your surgical plan.
If you’re curious about less invasive or combination options, check out the facelift technique options we offer. It breaks down the range—from mini lifts to combined facial surgeries—so you can see where you fit best.
Recovery: What to Expect
The recovery process for both facelift techniques is more comfortable than most people imagine.
With a traditional facelift, you’ll typically take about 10 to 14 days off work. Swelling and bruising fade within two to three weeks, and you’ll look great by about a month.
A deep plane facelift follows a similar timeline, but because the skin isn’t pulled tight, bruising tends to be less pronounced and fades more evenly. Most patients feel ready to go out socially by 4 weeks and ready for more significant social events, such as a wedding or class reunion, about 6 weeks after their procedure.
Dr. Camp and our team guide you through every stage, from surgery to developing a skincare routine, to make recovery smooth and predictable.

Are Deep Plane Facelifts the Way of the Future?
Yep. My husband, who’s a board-certified plastic surgeon and very particular about doing things right, believes the traditional facelift is on its way out. He only performs deep plane facelifts now. Why? Because it delivers what people actually want: natural contour, a midface lift, and real longevity.
I am insanely proud of the work, time, and education he has put in over the last many years; attending meetings and training with leading experts nationally and internationally to perfect this approach. It is evident in our results, and, honestly, in the joy of our patients when they see themselves again.
Many plastic surgeons claim to perform deep plane facelifts, but are they truly trained in this specialized technique? He is…And trust me, he’s not into shortcuts or trendy gimmicks. This is about anatomy, precision, and results that hold up over time.
My Personal Takeaway
Having experienced it firsthand, I can say this: a deep plane facelift doesn’t make you look “different.” It brings you back to yourself. I see it in our patients every day, and I saw it in my own mirror.
So if you’re wondering which facelift is right for you, come talk with us. We’ll help you understand your options, your anatomy, and your goals, and together we’ll design a plan that gives you results that look beautifully, naturally you.
