What Is the Difference Between the Types of GLP-1 Medications?
Not all GLP-1 medications are the same. While they share the same core function—helping regulate appetite, blood sugar, and metabolism—different formulations are available to better match your health needs and lifestyle.
Treatment formulas: Most GLP-1 therapies used for weight management are injections. In select cases, oral formulations exist but may be used for other indications. Your provider will determine which option fits your needs and treatment goals.
Frequency of treatment: Depending on the specific medication and dosage, treatments may be administered weekly or daily.
How they work: All GLP-1 medications target the hormones that regulate hunger and digestion, helping you feel full longer and maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Some also engage additional metabolic pathways to enhance weight loss and overall results.
Your provider will work with you to determine which GLP-1 medication best fits your needs and goals. By personalizing your treatment plan, we can help you continue making progress and maintain long-term results through a balanced, medically guided approach.
Why Do We Offer Different GLP-1 Medications?
Every patient responds to treatment a little differently. Some people reach a point where their progress slows, even with consistent use of a GLP-1 medication. That’s why we offer more than one type of GLP-1 therapy—so we can tailor your plan and help your body respond in new ways.
By adjusting your treatment, we can often help restart your weight loss momentum and support continued metabolic improvement. Our patients, especially men, have experienced impressive results with this personalized approach.

What Are the Benefits of GLP-1 Medications for Weight Loss?
The benefits vary by patient but may include:
- Significant weight loss: These medications have been shown to promote substantial weight loss in clinical trials. In one study combining a certain GLP-1 medication with behavioral modifications, more than half of the participants lost 15% of their body weight, and about a third lost 20%.
- Improved appetite control: GLP-1 medications act on the appetite and satiety centers in the brain, leading to reduced food cravings and decreased appetite.
- Increased feelings of fullness: These medications may slow the emptying of the stomach, promoting a sense of fullness and reducing hunger.
- Potential health benefits: Weight loss achieved with GLP-1 medications may improve glycemic control, reduce blood pressure, decrease cholesterol levels, and lower the risk of certain obesity-related complications.
To further support your weight loss journey, consider Modern Wellness NAD+ therapy, designed to enhance energy levels, improve metabolism, and promote overall wellness.

What Is the Process Like?
Your health and well-being are our primary considerations. To ensure GLP-1 medications are right for you:
- You’ll complete a medical history form, including a list of all medications you currently take.
- We will record your height, weight, and blood pressure.
- We will order lab tests.
If your lab work indicates you’re a candidate for this medically managed weight loss program, our office will contact you to schedule your first injection appointment and an educational session about the medication. We will provide instructions on how to administer future injections at home.
If you don’t feel like you can inject yourself at home or don’t have a helper, you can come in weekly for your injections.
A follow-up visit will be scheduled 3 weeks later to check your weight and determine how you are tolerating the medication. Your next dose will be ordered at that time. You will then return to our office monthly to check your weight and receive your next prescription.
Ongoing Support
You’ll have everything at home you need for success, but you will also have on-demand access to our team. Whether it’s phone, text, in person or FaceTime, we are here to help.

Are GLP-1 Medications Safe?
Yes! The GLP-1 injections we offer at Steven Camp MD Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics use the same ingredients as the brand-name weight loss drugs available via your doctor. Our medications are prepared by state-licensed compounding pharmacies that hand-deliver the medications to the practice each week. Each batch undergoes extensive quality checks to ensure patient safety and treatment efficacy.
As with any medication, GLP-1 injections may have side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your health care professional before starting our GLP-1-based program for weight loss. Regular monitoring and follow-up are required during treatment.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Weight Loss Injections?
Men and women who have a healthy diet and lifestyle and are free from major health issues such as heart conditions, thyroid conditions, pancreatitis, or high cholesterol with a BMI between 27 and 30 are considered appropriate candidates for weight loss injections.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we do not recommend using weight loss injections.
For patients with a BMI between 24 and 27, we may prescribe microdose GLP-1 injections to help you lose weight.
It is important to have a consultation with one of our skilled medical professionals before starting any weight loss program to ensure you are in good health and are a good candidate for these treatments. The team at Camp Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics will provide weekly check-ins with you to ensure you are feeling well and achieving your expected weight loss goals.

What Our Patients Are Saying
Google – 5 stars
I can’t say enough good things about the staff at Dr. Camps office! They make me feel like a celebrity everytime I walk in. [The team] puts a smile on my face everytime I see her! I am down to my goal weight and lost 40 lbs … Crystal is unbelievable and the best lip artist out there! I’m obsessed with my lip fillers everytime she does them and my Botox. I can’t recommend the hydro facial enough, I have had 2 and my skin has never felt better. Crystal makes you so comfortable and is just amazing at what she does and is a true perfectionist! I never thought I would be the type to do Botox and fillers but they do such a good job and the staff feels like family now. – KD

- How do I take my shot?
-
The shot is self-administered at home. You will need to keep your injection refrigerated, and will administer the shot into your upper arm, upper thigh, or in your abdomen once per week.
- I had a bad experience at my last location, how will your office be different?
-
We are here for you 24/7! We have dedicated support staff available for appointments to talk through any questions or concerns you have. Just reach out to us via phone or using the online form to schedule an appointment.
- How do I transition up or down on my dosing?
-
If you need to increase or reduce your dosing of GLP-1 medication, talk to one of our trained staff members. We will schedule a consultation, perform a blood test and physical exam, then can adjust your dosage to suit your needs.
- How do I keep my protein levels up when using a GLP-1 medication?
-
Since GLP-1 medications affect your appetite and how much you eat, we recommend eating your lean protein first, followed by vegetables and carbs. This helps balance your diet and ensure you keep your protein levels steady.
- Will this help me get closer to having surgery with Dr. Camp?
-
Yes, it can help. If you have been told that your BMI is too high to safely have surgery with Dr. Camp, consistent use of GLP-1 therapy to lose weight and reduce your BMI can help make you a candidate for plastic surgery with Dr. Camp.
- What labs does your office collect before I start?
-
During your consultation, we will draw your blood and assess your weight and physical health to ensure you are a good candidate for GLP-1 injections. We will test your fasting insulin levels, A1C levels, and blood sugar levels.
- Which foods should I avoid when taking GLP-1 medication?
-
In general, you should avoid foods that are high in sugar, difficult to digest, and foods high in saturated fat. We encourage you to embrace a healthy diet of lean protein, fruits and vegetables to support consistent weight loss.
- Will I experience hair loss? What can I do about it?
-
Some patients taking a GLP-1 medication have experienced hair loss while on the therapy. If you experience hair loss, we can prescribe Nutrafol and recommend Keravive hair restoration treatments to improve the health of your scalp and hair follicles.
