BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic treatment worldwide, known for erasing frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. Less well-known are the multiple other uses for BOTOX that give our Fort Worth, Texas, patients excellent results.
Surprising BOTOX Uses
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 9.5 million BOTOX and neuromodulator treatments were performed in the U.S. last year. Many of those treatments were for nonwrinkle-related concerns such as:
1. Jawline Slimming
Injecting BOTOX into the masseter muscles (used for chewing) creates a slimmer, more well-defined jawline. Overactive masseter muscles can lead to a square or bulky jaw appearance that looks more masculine. BOTOX relaxes the muscles so they gradually reduce in size, resulting in a slimmer jawline. This treatment is not only cosmetic but can also address symptoms of teeth grinding and jaw pain, relieving tension headaches and discomfort associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
2. Gummy Smile Treatment
If you feel self-conscious because your upper lip lifts too high when you smile, exposing a significant portion of your gums, BOTOX injections offer a nonsurgical treatment option. It targets the muscles responsible for elevating the upper lip so the lip remains lower and covers more of the gums when you smile. It’s important to choose an expert injector, such as a member of our Bowtie Babes, to ensure your lips still move naturally when smiling.
3. BOTOX “Lip Flip”
A BOTOX lip flip is a popular alternative to lip fillers if you want the appearance of a fuller upper lip. Injecting BOTOX at the corners of the upper lip causes the lip to relax and “flip” outward, creating the illusion of a fuller lip without adding volume. This subtle change enhances the shape of the lips and creates an attractive smile. You can learn more about the BOTOX lip flip and other information about injectables in our earlier blog post.
4. Smoothing Lipstick Lines
Fine lines around the lips, often called “lipstick lines” or “smoker’s lines,” can be smoothed with BOTOX injections. Like other expression lines treated with BOTOX, these lines are caused by repetitive movements of the mouth, such as talking, smoking, or sipping from a straw. BOTOX relaxes the muscles around the lips, reducing the appearance of these lines and preventing them from deepening.
5. Minimizing Neck Bands
Your neck is often one of the first areas to show signs of aging, including vertical lines called neck bands or neck cords. They are also called platysmal bands because they’re caused by the platysma muscle. You can see them when clenching your teeth or clenching your neck muscles. Eventually, those bands remain prominent even when you’re relaxed.
Injecting BOTOX to relax the platysma muscle is also called a “Nefertiti lift,” named after the ancient Egyptian queen known for her elegant neck. By softening the neck bands, BOTOX improves the overall contour of the neck and jawline, providing a more youthful and refined look.
Besides the cosmetic uses listed here, the FDA has also approved BOTOX to treat medical conditions such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and chronic migraine headaches.
