Do I need a Mini, Full, or Extended Tummy Tuck?

After dieting, working out, and losing excess pounds—but not your pooch—you’re ready to find out if a tummy tuck can achieve the results you want. But did you know there are multiple types of tummy tucks? If you have lost weight but still want to tighten and tone your midsection, it’s essential to understand all the options available to you, including a mini tummy tuck or an extended tummy tuck.

What is a full tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure for men and women that I specialize in at my Fort Worth practice. A full tummy tuck is an excellent choice for patients who want their midsection to appear slimmer and firmer after a pregnancy or significant weight loss. The surgery involves two incisions: one horizontal incision just above the pubic area, and one encircling the bellybutton. These allow me to remove excess skin and/or fat from the midsection and tighten weakened abdominal muscles—a condition called diastasis recti. Once the skin is trimmed, the incision is closed with sutures, and the abdomen begins to transform and heal.

What is a mini tummy tuck?

Patients whose issues are confined to the area below the bellybutton may be good candidates for a mini tummy tuck. During a mini tummy tuck, a small horizontal incision is made just above the pubic area to remove sagging skin below the navel. There is no bellybutton incision, and muscle repair is more limited with a mini tummy tuck.

Mini tummy tuck benefits:

  • Smaller lower pelvic incision
  • No bellybutton incision
  • Shorter recovery time (1-2 weeks)

While the idea of a mini tummy tuck may seem appealing, there are relatively few patients who are good candidates for this procedure.

What is an extended tummy tuck?

Unlike a full or mini tummy tuck, an extended tummy tuck treats your entire midsection, plus excess skin on your hips and the sides of your lower back. It uses a horizontal incision that stretches across the lower abdomen and the side of the lower back. In some cases, there may also be a vertical incision. In many cases, liposuction is performed in conjunction with an extended tummy tuck as removing extra fat can result in smoother contours. After excess fat and skin have been removed and muscles and tissues repaired, the skin is pulled tightly back over the abdomen, and a new bellybutton opening is created. An extended tummy tuck requires a slightly longer recovery than a full tummy tuck.

Extended tummy tuck benefits:

  • A single procedure targets your entire midsection (tummy, waist, and hips)
  • When paired with liposuction, the midsection achieves maximum sculpting
  • Bellybutton is reconstructed to complement your “new” stomach
  • Transformative results

Considerations for Your Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck, and an extended tummy tuck are all designed for men and women who want the appearance of a flatter, firmer midsection, You and your surgeon should discuss the following factors when planning for your procedure:

  • Amount of excess skin. The amount and location of loose skin and fat deposits often help determine whether it is best to perform a mini, full, or extended tummy tuck.
  • Skin quality. For a mini tummy tuck, the skin must retain most of its elasticity.
  • Surgical history. Any existing scarring of the midsection from previous surgeries can impact surgical technique and overall outcome.
  • Lifestyle. Patients who prioritize exercise and good nutrition often achieve optimal results, especially when undergoing a major, life-changing surgical procedure.
  • Recovery. Every patient has a unique surgical journey and recovery process. In determining the right procedure for you, consider the importance of giving yourself time to recover by not pushing yourself too quickly and ensuring you have adequate support—especially if you are caring for young children.
  • Long-term goals. Understanding your unique goals will help your surgeon recommend the procedure that best aligns with your needs. Be sure to communicate freely and honestly during your consultation to help achieve the best long-term results.
