Tell Me What You Think About Your Profile?

Dr. Camp

“I don’t know what I need, but I want to look better.  You’re the surgeon…tell me what you think.”

Versions of this conversation are common at our Fort Worth practice.  In fact, I hear this almost daily from patients who approach plastic surgery and injectables with a trusting mindset.  They are hoping through advanced training and plastic surgeon’s eye I can look at them and know what will best help them.  While yes I can, I also want them to be part of the plan.  So I often ask back,

“Tell me what you think about your profile.”

Now quick…run to the mirror and look.  What did you see?  Well, 67% of people recently surveyed stated that they were bothered by fat or fullness under their chin.  You know…the dreaded double-chin. In fact, the survey results showed that people are just as bothered by submental fullness as they are by lines and wrinkles around and under their eyes.   Why do we see submental (under the chin) fat? Primarily this occurs due to three reasons: (1) weight gain, (2) aging, and (3) genetics.  Yes, your mother might have given you your beautiful blue eyes and raven black hair but she also gave you a fullness under your chin that you just can’t escape.

So what do we do? There are a few options:

  • Ignore it.  Yes, not everyone is interested in plastic surgery options
  • Kybella
  • CoolSculpting
  • Liposuction
  • A combination of 2 through 4

For today’s post, let’s talk Kybella.   With this under the chin injection, 79% of patients treated with Kybella had improvement in appearance of their face and area beneath the chin 12 weeks after their last treatment compared with 33.6% treated with placebo.

Kybella’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid which appears naturally in the body to breakdown and absorb dietary fat.  With injection beneath the chin, fat cells are destroyed and can thereby no longer store or accumulate fat.  Each patient is different but most patients see visible results in 2 to 4 Kybella treatments while some need up to 6.  Treatments are scheduled 1 month apart.  In clinical studies the following was seen:

I hope that you feel like you understand a little bit more about the use of Kybella and how it might help you. For further questions I really like the Kybella website, but would encourage you to make an in-person consultation with our office.
