Bra Shopping After Breast Augmentation: Everything You Need to Know

How to buy bras after breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation patients at my Fort Worth practice tell me that buying new bras is an exciting and fun way to celebrate their new shape. But as I tell them, if you’re planning for or recovering from breast augmentation, there are a few things you should keep in mind as you plan for your lingerie shopping spree.

In this post, I’ll discuss a few tips for making the most out of your post-surgery wardrobe revamp.

Initial Recovery Bras

We provide you with your first post-operative bra, but you’ll need some additional short-term garments that can provide compression and support to encourage healing during the first few weeks. These stretchy, sports-type bras will discourage swelling and make sure your results heal beautifully.

Stick with soft compression garments that you can easily get on and off. Avoid any bras with underwires, as they may irritate your incisions and compromise blood flow to the healing tissues during this time.

Transitional Bras

For the first few months, you may still experience swelling and your implants may continue to “drop” or “settle.” Though you may feel ready to move away from wearing only recovery bras, your sizing will likely still fluctuate a bit. Avoid spending major money on new pieces during these months, as tempting as it may be. Invest in a couple of bras you feel confident in, but keep in mind that they probably won’t be right for your shape in the long term. You may want to wait about 6 months before making any big purchases.

Getting Refitted

It’s important to get a professional fitting once you’re healed. You’ll be working with a completely new sizing range and will likely need some guidance.

Important to note: When we use VECTRA® 3D imaging to measure out your ideal result, we estimate your implant size in cubic centimeters (cc), not cup sizes. Because of this, even if you had a certain goal size in mind before surgery, your actual size may be a bit different. (Learn more about our size selection process in our previous blog post.)

Trust an expert to point you toward the right bra size. This will help you show off your results in the best, most flattering way.

Keeping an Open Mind

Your new figure may be best suited to styles that are very different from what you’re used to. It’s a good idea to try out a range of new styles and silhouettes, including both things you’ve dreamed of wearing and things you never would have gravitated toward before. Use this as an opportunity to have fun, celebrate your new shape, and enjoy the renewed sense of confidence you’ve been looking forward to.
